Some history for those interested...


I was recently watching C-Span TV which was airing a law school lecture about the Dred Scott Decision. I missed about half the program but caught the part where the professor went into detail about Chief Justice Taney's ruling. Taney actually claimed the court had no jurisdiction in the case but went on to rule against Scott anyway, and open up all the territories to slavery by striking down the Missouri Compromise and any other congressional measures that regulated slavery anywhere in the territories. I did a search on the internet to find out a bit more about the case and came across this paper which explains the case in very simplistic terms which could be used by any teacher teaching the subject to high school age students.
